What is hip pain?

Hip pain can originate from the joint itself, the surrounding muscles and tendons, or the lower back. Common conditions include hip bursitis (trochanteric pain syndrome), labral tears, hip flexor tendinopathy, osteoarthritis, and piriformis syndrome. Because the hip connects the upper and lower body, dysfunction here often affects the back, knee, and overall gait.

Common symptoms

Pain on the outside of the hip
Groin pain with movement
Stiffness after sitting or in the morning
Pain when walking or climbing stairs
Difficulty crossing legs or putting on shoes
Clicking or catching in the joint
Pain that disrupts sleep
Limping or altered gait

What causes hip pain?

Hip pain commonly results from muscle imbalances, prolonged sitting, overuse from running or walking, and age-related changes like osteoarthritis. Weak glute muscles and tight hip flexors are frequent contributors. Falls, repetitive movements, and structural factors like leg length differences can also play a role.

How virtual PT helps with hip pain

1

Evaluation

Your PT assesses your hip through video — watching your gait, testing range of motion and strength, and identifying movement patterns that may be contributing to your pain.

2

Treatment

Your program focuses on strengthening the glutes and hip stabilizers, improving hip mobility, and addressing any compensations in your lower back or knee. Exercises are progressed as your pain decreases.

3

Ongoing support

Message your PT between visits with questions or updates. Your program is adjusted as you progress toward your goals.

What to expect

Your first visit is about 60 minutes over video. Your PT will assess your hip through movement tests and build a targeted plan. Most patients notice improvement within 4-6 weeks of consistent work.
